Integration of Technology with Curricula, Instruction, and Assessment

MSAD 5 believes it is our responsibility to prepare students to be contributing individuals in a technology-oriented society. Students and staff members alike need to develop the competencies necessary to interact in a world that has state-of-the-art technology. It is essential that teachers be able to demonstrate the ability to integrate telecommunications and other technology tools into their standards-based curricula to improve student achievement and to provide students with the skills that they will need to further their educational careers and/or enter the workplace.

This staff is currently made up of a technology director, a network administrator, a computer technician, and two certified integration specialists, The network administrator provides a stable computer network and maintains all of the district's software. The two integrators work closely with classroom teachers to develop and implement appropriate technology curricula and provide the hands-on support to both students and staff in the Middle and High School .The Technology plan includes stipends for one person in each of the K-5 buildings to provide support to the staff. MSAD 5 is currently lacking a K-12 technology curriculum, however one will be developed and implemented as part of this plan.

The NCREL institute which we have used for evaluating staff and students at the beginning and end of the Technology Plan, also provides a vast array of on-line strategies and materials for integrating technology effectively into curriculum and instruction. "The enGauge framework is a new way of thinking about learning, teaching, and leading in a digital age. It provides a comprehensive view of critical factors in the educational system that strongly influence the effectiveness of learning technology." (Porter, 2002). The training received by Technology Director as an APPLE / SEED trainer for the MLTI project and her Masters Program for Computers & Technology in Education, provides the district with an invaluable human resource to be tapped as well. The Maine Learning Technology Initiative is an excellent resource for providing staff development, assessment and technology integration for middle school teachers. This resource will be shared widely within the district.

MSAD 5 will be implementing NWEA (Northwest Evaluation Association) during the 2006-07 school year. NWEA provides research-based assessments, professional training, and consulting services to improve teaching and learning. All students in grades 3 through 10 will be tested in the fall and spring. In addition MSAD 5 will be implementing Lexia reading with all students K-2, title one 3-12, and special education students 3-12.
