drawing
for the absolute
beginner
Join us for this one-day intensive drawing workshops with renowned artist Dyan Berk. Have you ever wanted to learn from a pro? Here is your chance to see like an artist sees. Making marks on paper begins at a very young age. You just do it and you do it with great joy! At age 9 or 10, however, when your drawings ‘don’t look right’ you become discouraged and stop drawing. Based on the premise that everyone can learn to draw, this workshop begins right where you left off. Learning to draw is really a matter of learning to see. Once you begin to experience this new way of ‘seeing’, you will watch as your drawings begin to actually ‘make themselves’. A series of exercises will engage you in the process of direct observation. My job is to encourage you to see in this new way. When we experience drawing as a process of ‘seeing’ and not as an attempt to reproduce some idea of reality our work will reveal our personal vision and style. This workshop is a great introduction to the authentic drawing process. Course fee includes all materials and class will break for a one-hour lunch at noon.

jin shin jyutsu self-help, part 1
- How would it be if you knew simple, effective, hands-on, in-the-moment practices to relax, energize, defuse strong emotions and refocus, any time and any place?
- What if these practices also promoted health and healing by helping you to harmonize your energy and body-mind?
- Jin Shin Jyutsu Self-Help, Part 1, will teach you how to effect all of the above in simple, fun ways, using books, discussion, drawings, activities and your own hands-on practice.
- You will learn about the anatomy of energy, where it flows through your body, how it can become blocked, and how to restore energy flow to relieve stress, fatigue, symptoms and pain.
Jin Shin Jyutsu is the ancient art of harmonizing the life energy in the human body. The practice of Jin Shin Jyutsu releases tensions, which are the causes for various symptoms in the body. This is accomplished by the simple application of hands, over clothing, to specific areas called safety energy locks. This clears blocked energy pathways that are needed to feed life into our cells. When one or more of the energy pathways are blocked it may lead to illness, pain or disease.
The class fee includes the text, Jin Shin Jyutsu Is, Book 1. Please bring materials for notes and colored pencils or pens (yellow, blue, green, gray or black and red); for self-help practice, bring cushions, blankets and/or pillows to be comfortable lying on the floor. Dress comfortably and bring water and snacks, if desired, and a bag lunch if you are attending the one-day intensive. This class is a prerequisite for Jin Shin Jyutsu Self-Help, Part 2, with Karen Searls, which will be offered in the winter term. Part 2 emphasizes first aid and healing chronic labels and specific health disharmonies. Nurses can attend all four weekly classes or all hours of the day-long intensive to receive 7 Continuing Education Credits. There is a $10 fee for CE certificate, paid directly to the instructor.
Karen Searls is a certified practitioner of Jin Shin Jyutsu and a certified teacher of Jin Shin Jyutsu Self-Help. She has worked as a complementary health care practitioner since 1996 and has trained in reiki, shiatsu, neurosomatic bodywork, anatomy/physiology, ethics and empathic communication. Karen is nationally certified through the National Certification Board for Therapeutic Massage and Bodywork. She is approved to offer this class for CE credits through Empowering Connections, LLC, an approved provider of continuing education by ASNA, an accredited approver by the American Nurses Credentialing Center's Commission on Accreditation.
