Mission statement
To support students in their personal, academic and lifelong learning goals and foster an environment of empowerment in which students can reach their highest potential outside of traditional day school.
Grading system
A = 100 – 93 D = 74 - 68
B = 92 – 85 F = 67 and below C = 84 – 75
Assessments and examinations will be given in each course to test knowledge base. Instructors will choose their preferred exam method but all exams will consist of one of the following: long-essay; short-essay questions; multiple choice; oral and/or “pop” quiz; data match; research paper. Consult your course syllabus for detailed information regarding grading and exams.
attendance
Attendance to all classes is mandatory. Students are allowed only one excused absence in a 45-hour, 15-week academic course. All in-class work as well as homework for the missed class must be completed and turned in to the instructor. If more than one class is missed, the student will be asked to repeat the class when they can commit the necessary time to their studies. If there is special circumstances (e.g., accident or hospitalization) student may appeal the attendance policy to the Director.
Eligibility
Students who wish to attend MSAD#5’s Adult High School Completion courses must meet one of the following criteria:
1. Enrolled Rockland District High School student who has failed a course and must retake said failed course in the evenings to graduate. The RDHS principal is the sole authority for granting credits and determining any exceptional circumstances under which the rules for credit may be altered.
2. Enrolled area high school student (George’s Valley, Medomak, Camden) who has failed a course and must retake failed course in the evenings in order to graduate. The sending school’s principal is the sole authority for granting credit to their students
3. Non-enrolled day school student who has been out of school for at least one year and wants to complete high school credits through the evening adult education course offerings.
4. Fully withdrawn day school student who has been out of school for less than one year but special circumstances exist. Eligibility will be determined by Adult Education staff and High School counseling staff.
Curriculum
Curriculum for high school diploma completion courses are derived from the standards set by Maine Learning Results (MLR). MLR areas of focus are:
Career Preparation English Language Arts
Modern and Classical Languages Mathematics
Science and Technology Social Studies
Teachers for the MSAD #5 High School Completion program will be certified, or conditionally certified, K-12 teachers well-versed in the MLR requirements.
Course Requirements
A total of 20 Carnegie Units are needed to obtain a RDHS Adult Education Diploma. Up to six (6) out-of-school credits may be awarded for work, military, homemaking, or volunteer experience.

Out-of-School Credits
Work Experience (1) Unit for 3 years (+2000 hours) and (2) units for 5 years experience (+3500 hours) includes military and childrearing.
Career Exploration (1) Unit per 45-hour course (maximum 2 credits allotted).
Independent Study (1) Unit per 45-hour course (maximum 2 credits allotted).
Correspondence School (1) Unit per 45-hour course (max 2 credits allotted).
Volunteer (1) Unit per 45-hour course (maximum 2 credits allotted).
Diploma
Students who complete 20 approved high school completion credit hours will receive a Rockland District High School Adult Education Diploma. Please note: Students enrolled after July 1, 2007 will receive a diploma stating “Rockland District High School Adult Education Diploma”, graduates receiving their diploma prior to July 1, 2007 will receive a Rockland District High School diploma.

A graduation ceremony will be held in June of each year to honor the students who have completed their high school diploma as part of MSAD #5 Adult Education as well as those students who have obtained their GED within the course of the academic year.
